Your PCP is your first stop for preventive care For example, they may let you know if you're due for a mammogram or bone density test. Going in regularly can help catch any health issues early on, and it's a great time to check in on how you're feeling, both physically and mentally.
As you get older, your health needs change and become more complex. Your PCP serves as a point person who coordinates care with specialists when you need it, and they stay in the loop on your tests and prescriptions.

When it comes to your heath, choosing a primary care provider is one of the most important decisions you'll make, and it's well worth it to find the right one. You might need to call a few places, or meet a few doctors, before you find the right fit—but working with someone you trust is a long-term investment in your health!
1. Choose the type of provider you want
Primary care providers can be doctors, physician assistants or nurse practitioners, and they can specialize in family practice, general practice, internal medicine or geriatrics.
2. Read reviews and ask around
Does a friend or family member have a doctor they recommend? Ask around! You can talk to them about their experience to see if they might be a good fit. You can also read reviews for providers right in our find a doctor search tool.
3. Sign in and search for a provider
It may take time before you can get in for your first appointment. After you’ve selected a provider, give their office a call to make sure they’re accepting new patients and to make an appointment. 4. Reach out and have a conversation
Compatibility with your PCP is important! Do you feel comfortable with them? Do they listen and explain things well? Sometimes you can schedule an introductory phone call, or you can go in for a face-to-face visit to test the waters. It's always ok to decide that someone isn't a good fit and continue your search.
5. Check out telehealth or urgent care clinic options
Do you travel a lot or have trouble making it to the doctor's office? You may be able to find a telehealth PCP who does virtual appointments. You can also ask any provider if they offer telehealth services. If you need to see someone and are having trouble getting an appointment, some urgent care clinics offer primary care services as well.
When it’s time for your annual visit with your primary care doctor, you’ll want to be prepared so you get the most out of your time.
